The Bottom Line

Small Personal Donors

For small donations, pick one or two of your favorite charities and donate to them only. Why? Because once you are on an organization's donor list, you will regularly receive letters and/or phone calls asking for additional donations. Such solicitations are expensive, so if you want the charitable organizations to spend your money on their target cause and not on soliciting donations, focus your giving.

If you make small donations to thirty charities, you'll have thirty organizations sending you solicitation letters. Avoid that by directing your donations to only one or two organizations.

Donate Locally

The rule of fill your own cup first applies here, too. When you donate into your own community, you are strengthen your home base. You are making your own community stronger, healthier, wiser, more prosperous, or whatever. Of course, you are compassionate about the misfortunes of people in other parts of the world. We are simply suggesting that you consider all the factors involved when you donate

When you donate to a major, national or international cause, ask yourself these questions: "Where is my money really going?" How much of it is going to those in need and how much gets side tracked along the way? The answer is that you really don't know.

Most charities do honorable, high-quality work, but they frequently run into government bureaucracies that interfere with their work, and many times the money intended for the people in need gets stolen or redirected away form where you intended it to go.

You can avoid that by donating locally. Ask yourself, "Who and/or what in my local community would benefit from my donations." Ask, "What am I passionate about? Move you donation money in that direction.

Donate Personally

Another factor to consider is your personal, internal relationship with yourself and your connection to other people. Is there any passion in writing a check and sending hundreds or thousands of miles away?

Consider looking into your local community for inspiration. Notice when the sparkle comes into your eyes or when your internal feeling tell you, "I like this." Whatever you find, expand that in your local community. That's where to direct your money and your time.

Yes, I said your time. Getting personally involved in something outside yourself can be infinitely rewarding.

Also consider this: If there is something you could do, purchase or experience that could significantly enhance your own well-being, that's a good place to start being generous. (See the next section below)

Job Number One -- Self Care

Before you can be of any value to anyone else, you must take care of yourself, first. You cannot help yourself or anyone else if you are living in fear, stress, and desperation. You cannot get poor enough to make anyone else wealthy. You cannot get sick enough to make anyone else healthy. You can't bet dumb enough to make anyone else smart.

Commercial airlines demonstrate the take-care-of-yourself-first principle every day. Prior to take off, the stewardess will demonstrate what to do if, in case of an emergency and the oxygen masks are deployed. She say, "Put your own mask on first and then take care of your children or others in need." So fill your own cup first, but not from the ego perspective that I'm better than you, but from the perspective of "Do thyself no harm because we need you. We are all in this together."

The BottomLine

Being altruistic is the most selfish way to live. Why? Because when you view who you are from a cosmic level, you'll find that each and every one of us is an intimately-interrelated aspects on one single completeness that we commonly refer to as Creator/God.

From that perspective: Whatever I do for you, I also do for me. Whatever I do for me, I also do for you. Whatever I do to you, I also do to me. Whatever I do to me, I also do to you.

Viewed form the cosmic perspective, we see that we cannot give anything away. We can't steal anything either. Why? Because whatever you do (put out into the universe) comes back to you multi-fold.

"What goes around comes around."

"As you do onto the least of mine, you do onto me."
